ArtAI: what is art ? what is not ? Does / should it matter ? (By Alchemise Innovation)
Art defies a singular, universally accepted definition, instead representing a vast and dynamic spectrum of human expression. At its core, it is a creative endeavor, manifesting across countless mediums—from painting, sculpture, and music to literature, dance, and digital forms—that seeks to communicate ideas, evoke emotions, provoke thought, or simply create an aesthetic experience. Whether reflecting reality, challenging norms, or exploring abstract concepts, art is fundamentally a dialogue between the creator, the work, and the observer, shaped by culture, history, and individual perception, making its meaning often subjective and endlessly open to interpretation.
The question is not so much perhaps what art is, but where it has boundaries. In ancient history, when a cave person did their early drawings, when other homo sapiens then copied it, did the copy stop being art? When DaVinci painted the Mona Lisa, was he not just copying the real person? Jason Pollock dripping paint on a surface. Does that become art? Photography, copies real life, why is that art? Illustrations based on other work. If someone uses the descriptions of Tolkien, does that mean its not art just a reflection. What if someone uses the likeness of someone in a film to create an image? Piling up items like Tracey Emin, is that art ? Maybe using a computer to draw is the line, after all the computer in reality is doing the hard work! AI, when you craft a design and manually add to it, is that art?
I think art is what you make it, it is how you view it. Is a nice looking image by AI, vs a terrible hand sketched image any more or less art. When your child paints an image, is that art? of course it is.
Art is what you make of it. Do not mislead about the tools used. Enjoy it for what it is. Be polite even if it is not your thing. Just Enjoy.
